How To Find Creative Cloud Duplicates?

Duplicate files are a cause of great headache and distress — not only for individuals, but also for businesses and organizations.

Aside from occupying a part of your storage space, duplicate files slow down the computer performance, and increase the difficulty level in finding the right version of your document. It becomes difficult to identify which was the most updated version that contains your recent changes.

Duplicates are not located in a specific folder, and therefore, it becomes fairly difficult to identify and act upon them. Your identical files could be located in different folders, sub-folders, partitions (such as C:\, D:\), removable media storages (such as, external hard disk, USB stick), and even Internet storages (such as, Google Drive, OneDrive, DropBox and Box).

Here, we will learn two major approaches to deal with the problem of duplication.

Method # 1: Manually Compute & Compare File Hashes

A computer hash is a fixed-length value representing the inherent contents of a document. Hashes are generated using a lossy compression, cryptographic mechanism which produce output values representing the magnitude of the input value, as such they cannot be decrypted. You cannot get the original string of information from these hashes.

There are different types of hashes. MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 are some of the widely popular and secure file hashing algorithms commonly used to compare file contents. Apart from finding duplicate files, hashes are also used to get indication of accidental corruption of user’s confidential information.

Here, the idea is to generate hashes for each file based on their unique content. Thankfully, Windows has an in-house functionality to manually compute SHA-256 hashes. Since the hash values are generated by the Windows itself, there is accuracy and reliability in the process.

It, however, requires longer efforts on the part of the user. You may have to sit in front of the computer screen generating hashes and comparing each of them individually. This may not be a feasible approach if you’re a business user or if you intend to search a larger dataset consisting tens of GBs of files.

The procedure is as follows:

    1. Type PowerShell in the Search Box on your Taskbar.
    2. Right-click Windows PowerShell, and select Run as Administrator.
    3. Type in the following command:

  • Get-FileHash <full path to your desired file> | Format-List

For example:

If the desired file name is Tutorial.pdf, and it is stored in the D:\Downloads folder, type:

  • Get-FileHash D:\Downloads\Tutorial.pdf | Format-List

Windows-PowerShell

Caution: PowerShell is a key program that’s been a core part of the Microsoft Windows operating system just like Command Prompt. Although it offers useful set of rich features and access to many administrative tasks, using incorrect commands could cause damage to your system and/ or data loss. It is recommended to always verify the command-line and recheck the file names before processing any commands. Some of the commands are case-sensitive. Meaning, they may not work if you do not enter them in the given pattern (such as, upper case, lower case), just like passwords.

Method # 2: Automatically Scan For Duplicate Files (Takes Shorter Time & 100% Secure & Accurate)

The most famous technique to find Adobe Creative Cloud duplicates is to use a specialized software designed to automatically generate and compare hashes. This makes the entire task easier, and eliminates any possibility of human error and accidental deletion. The steps are as under:

  1. Quit any Adobe software that are running on your Desktop.
  2. Download Clone Files Checker from the official website of Sorcim.
  3. Install and run the program.
  4. Click on the System Scan tab in the main user interface.
  5. Select the Add option.
  6. Choose a destination directory that contains your files. Click on OK.
  7. Again, follow the same procedure for each directory that you want to scan.
  8. Leave the default All Files option selected, unless you intend to perform file type-specific scan.
  9. Click on Start Search.
  10. Wait for some time, and use the Fix Wizard option when prompted.
  11. Select which file version you want to keep in each group among Newest and Oldest.
  12. Select an action: Permanently Delete or Move to Folder.
