How to Track Game Playtime on Android (and Log Wins While You Play)
Digital Wellbeing shows today's screen time. When you want a session you start, a weekly goal, and wins on the game, compare that with a play companion.
Digital Wellbeing will tell you a game was on screen for two hours. It will not tell you that was two ranked matches and a loss streak, or that you already blew the weekly cap you meant to keep.
Game playtime tracking on Android is a session you start, a history you keep, and — if you want it — wins and losses logged while the game is open. Screen time is only the first of those.
Direct answer: Android’s official first look is Digital Wellbeing: Settings → Digital Wellbeing & parental controls. That chart is today’s screen time per app. Optional App timers close a title and dim its icon; they reset at midnight. On many Galaxy phones, Gaming Hub also stores play history. None of those tools start a clock when you tap Play, keep a weekly goal you own, or let you tap Win / Loss on the game. When that is the leftover, a play companion such as gameX: Play Companion (Sorcim Technologies — not a playable game, not a booster) is built to import titles from the phone, start a timed session, and — if you unlock the HUD — log results on an overlay. In-app tracking is free.
Key takeaways
- Start with Digital Wellbeing. It is free, official, and enough if you only need today’s minutes.
- App timers are daily and reset at midnight. They pause the app. They are not a weekly goal and not a match log.
- Galaxy phones add Gaming Hub play history. That is OEM history, not a Win / Loss overlay.
- A Play Games profile can show Google’s stats for supported games. Relative playtime may appear as a percentage of your overall Play Games time — not custom metrics on a sideloaded APK.
- A companion is for a session you start, a weekly goal, and wins you log. Tracking inside the companion stays free. The HUD on the other game needs Display over other apps and an unlock (a finished reward video for three hours, or gameX VIP).
- gameX is not a game, not a RAM cleaner, and it does not measure another title’s FPS or ping.
What “track playtime” actually means
Three different numbers get sold as the same phrase:
| You asked for | What you often get | Wins on the game? |
|---|---|---|
| Today’s screen time | Minutes the app was in the foreground | No |
| OEM / Play Games history | Hours the launcher or Google already recorded | No |
| A session you start | A clock you begin, a history you can edit, optional overlay taps | Yes, if you log them |
This page is about the third row. If a midnight lock on one app is all you want, stop at Method 1.
Compare methods
| Method | Best for | Session you start? | Weekly goal? | Typical limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Digital Wellbeing | Today’s minutes; a daily cap that closes the app | No — it watches the foreground | No — timers reset at midnight | No W/L; not every OEM labels it the same |
| Samsung Gaming Hub | Galaxy play history | No | History / streaks, not a goal you set | Galaxy only; data often through yesterday |
| Dedicated play companion | Import games, tap Play, log W/L | Yes | Yes, in the app | Overlay is gated; you install an app |
Use Settings first. Move on when the leftover is a session clock, a week you want to own, or wins you want to tap without leaving the match.
Method 1: See playtime in Digital Wellbeing
This is Google’s documented path for time in apps. Steps follow Android Help.
- Open the phone’s Settings.
- Tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
- Open the chart (wording may be Dashboard). You see today’s screen time per app — including games.
- Tap a game for more detail. On many phones you can swipe the chart for recent days.
To limit a game for today:
- Open App timers (or tap the hourglass next to the game).
- Set a daily limit and confirm.
- When time runs out, the app closes and its icon dims. The timer resets at midnight.
What this method is good at
- A honest “how long was this open today?”
- A hard stop on one title until tomorrow.
- No extra app.
Limits
- Foreground time is not “I sat down, played, and stopped.” A game left open on a lock screen still counts.
- There is no Win / Loss, no note, no overlay.
- You cannot set one weekly budget that covers several games and survives midnight.
- Work or school accounts may not support app timers.
If that answered the question, stop here.
Method 2: Samsung Gaming Hub play history (Galaxy phones)
On supported Galaxy phones, Samsung’s Gaming Hub help documents play history in the Gamer profile: games played today, play time today, and longer stats such as streak and longest session. Samsung notes that some history is shown through the previous day, and menu names vary by One UI version.
- Open Gaming Hub (or Game Launcher on older One UI).
- Open your Gamer profile.
- Check today’s summary, then Play history for charts and lists.
This is useful on a Galaxy. It is not on a Pixel. Game Booster’s in-game panel is a performance sidebar (notifications, FPS, system tools) — not a place to log wins. Xiaomi Game Turbo and similar OEM sidebars are the same kind of leftover: useful while you play, not a session history you take to another phone.
Method 3: A play companion that starts the session
A dedicated companion does not play a game of its own. You add titles (or import the ones already on the phone), tap Play to launch one and start a clock, then keep the week and the results in that app. Overlay taps — Win, Loss, a custom metric — sync when you return.
That is the job gameX: Play Companion is built for. Search Play for that full title from Sorcim Technologies. Other listings also say GameX; those are unrelated mini-game packs, not this companion.
When to use it
- Digital Wellbeing already showed the hours. You want a session you started, not only foreground time.
- You want one weekly goal that does not reset at midnight.
- You want to tap Win or Loss (or a custom count) without opening a notes app.
- You play titles Gaming Hub or Play Games never listed.
If you only need the app to dim after 45 minutes today, stay on Method 1.
Add games and start a session
- Install gameX: Play Companion from Google Play. It is a companion. It does not install games.
- Open Games. Tap Import from phone and tick the launcher titles you want to track — or add a game by hand. Import is a list of apps already on this device. It is not a store catalog.
- On Home, pick a game chip and tap Play. That launches the linked game and starts the session clock. You can also start from a game’s hub or from Sessions.
- When you are done, end the session. Duration, results, and an optional note save in Sessions. Overlay taps catch up when you come back to gameX.

A fresh install starts the weekly goal at 300 minutes. The slider is yours; it is not an Android app timer and it will not close the game for you.

Add past session is for minutes you forgot to track. HUD Timers and other tools live under More → All tools; they are optional. This article is the clock and the score, not the full toolbox.
Log wins on the overlay
The Play overlay is a compact panel on top of the game you launched — Track (Win, Loss, custom +1, HUD timers) and Tools (Do Not Disturb, pause other audio, volume, brightness, orientation lock). Hide leaves a Show chip. Stop ends the session without opening gameX first.
Two different gates:
- Permission — Android Display over other apps (some phones say Appear on top). Settings → Apps → Special app access → that list → gameX. This is not a normal allow prompt.
- Entitlement — a finished reward video unlocks the overlay for three hours (closing the ad early does not count), or gameX VIP keeps it on. Use the yearly price Google Play shows. Do not trust a screenshot.
In-app tracking — library, sessions, notes, tools inside gameX — stays free either way. The listing includes ads and in-app purchases.

Edit game turns wins/losses on or off and lets you add custom overlay metrics (kills, rounds — whatever you count). Those labels are yours. They are not imported from Play Games or Steam.
What this app is not
- Not a playable game and not the casual titles on the Sorcim homepage.
- Not a game booster, FPS overlay, or RAM cleaner. It does not measure another game’s frame rate or ping.
- Not Digital Wellbeing. It will not dim a game icon at midnight unless you also set an App timer.
- Not Samsung Gaming Hub or a Play Games profile.
- Not iPhone, not desktop, not cloud sync, not a trophy importer.
- Not unlimited free overlay. Permission and entitlement are both required to float on the other game.
FAQ
Does Android track how long I play games?
Yes — as screen time. Digital Wellbeing shows how long each app, including a game, was on screen today. That is not a session you started and not a win/loss log.
Can I see total hours for one game?
Digital Wellbeing keeps recent days, not a lifetime career page. Galaxy Gaming Hub can show longer play history on that phone. A companion only counts sessions you start (or add by hand) after you install it. Play Games may show stats for supported games; relative playtime can be a percentage, not a custom sheet.
Can I set a weekly game time limit?
Not with a stock App timer. Those limits are per app and reset at midnight. A companion weekly goal is a target you watch — it does not lock the game the way Digital Wellbeing does. Use both if you want a number and a hard stop.
How do I log wins while I play?
Android has no system Win button. A floating counter can tally taps. A play companion ties those taps to the session you launched. In gameX that is the overlay Track tab, after permission and an unlock.
What is Display over other apps?
A special Android setting that lets an app draw a small window on top of other apps. Game overlays need it. You turn it on in Settings, not with a one-tap in-app switch. Permission alone does not unlock gameX’s HUD; entitlement is separate.
Is gameX a game? Does it boost FPS?
No and no. It is a companion: library, sessions, overlay, tools. It does not play a title of its own and it does not raise another game’s frame rate or change that game’s ping.
Is the Android app free?
Library, sessions, and in-app tools are free. Ads show unless you subscribe. The overlay on the other game needs a finished reward video (three hours) or gameX VIP. Use the price Play shows.
Do I need root?
No. Digital Wellbeing, Gaming Hub, and this Play app run without root.
Will this track games I sideloaded?
If the title appears in the phone’s launcher, Import from phone can list it. It will not appear only because it is in someone else’s Play Games profile.
Start with Settings, then track what you care about
Open Digital Wellbeing. On a Galaxy, also open Gaming Hub → Gamer profile. If you already know today’s minutes and you still want a session you start, a weekly goal, and wins on the game, that leftover is a companion job.
Use the Play badge below for gameX: Play Companion. Tracking inside the app is free. Unlock the overlay only if you want the HUD on the match.
