SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Windows 10 Boot

This article contains basic troubleshooting information to resolve SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Windows 10 Boot error. Here are the steps you are supposed to undertake:

Free Up Disk Space

You may be running into low disk space. Use the Disk Clean-Up utility from the Drive Properties dialog box and then clear-up temporary files, files extracted by application installers, old restore points and so on.

Disable Buggy Driver

Try reproducing the same problem and look for the name of buggy driver displayed on the screen. With the Device Manager tool disable that driver and check if the problem still persists.

Restore BIOS

Set the default configurations for your BIOS using Delete/ F2 key prior to boot interval. If you’re using Lenovo, you may want to use small Easy Setup button of your keyboard. Set the default settings from the Exit menu. For more information, contact your manufacturer.

Replace Graphics Adapter

It may be a problem with graphics adapter. Replace it, if possible.

Update BIOS

Visit the website of your computer manufacturer and obtain latest BIOS update. Make sure it is newer than the existing version, otherwise it may lead to serious problems with your PC. Typically, a popup is displayed to close all open programs prior to the upgrade process.

Repair Boot Menu Policy

You need Windows operating system installation disc to repair the boot menu policy. Under Troubleshoot > Advanced Options run the below command using Command Prompt:

  • BCDEDIT /SET {DEFAULT} BOOTMENUPOLICY LEGACY

Do not use the standard elevated Command Prompt in Windows. Launch it from the Setup’s diagnostic options only.

Rename igdkmd64.sys

The file can be found in C:\Windows\System32 directory. Do not remove it permanently Just rename it as “igdkmd64.sys.backup”.

Reinstall Intel HD Graphics Software

Some of the files of Intel HD Graphics Software are corrupted. Repair the installation using the Setup wizard that you used for installation, or simply uninstall and reinstall it again from Control Panel.
