Configure New Account with IMAP

Microsoft Office Outlook 2013 supports POP, IMAP and Microsoft Exchange Server. Set up a new account with IMAP as shown below:

For Windows 8.1/ 8/ 7/ Vista:

  1. Open Microsoft Office Outlook 2013.
    • For Windows 8.1/ 8: Press Windows Key, click Outlook 2013 tile in the Start Screen.
    • For Windows 7/ Vista: Click Start, point to All Programs | Microsoft Office | Outlook 2013.
  2. Click the File icon on the Ribbon interface.
  3. Click Add Account button.
  4. Now you’ll notice a new wizard pop up on the screen.
  5. In the Auto Account Setup page, select the option named “Manual setup or additional server types”. Click Next.
  6. In the subsequent Choose Service page, select “POP or IMAP” option, click Next.
  7. In the POP and IMAP Account Settings page, fill up all the required information.
  8. Select “IMAP” option in the Account Type drop down box. (Server Information category)
  9. Click More Settings button.
  10. This opens up a new dialog.
  11. Click Outgoing Server tab.
  12. Check-up the box labeled “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication”.
  13. Click OK.
  14. Click Next and follow the on-screen instructions.

Uninstall Conflicting Updates

Windows Update KB2837618 and KB2837643 are known to cause IMAP folder error in Microsoft Office Outlook. Uninstalling these updates would be helpful.

Windows Update List

For Windows 8.1/ 8:

  1. Press Windows Key + X, select Control Panel.
  2. Click Programs icon.
  3. Click “View installed updates” link under Programs and Features category.
  4. This opens up a new list of all updates.
  5. Uninstall the following updates:
    • Windows Update KB2837618
    • Windows Update KB2837643

    (Right click an update, select Uninstall option)

  6. Exit out of the screen. Reboot your PC.

For Windows 7/ Vista:

  1. Click Start, type “View installed updates” in Search Box.
  2. Press ENTER.
  3. Refer to steps # 4-6 under Windows 8.1/ 8 section.

Change the Root Folder

As the error describes the root folder path settings are either misconfigured or root folder does not exist.

Microsoft Office Outlook 2013

For Windows 8.1/ 8/ 7/ Vista:

  1. Open Microsoft Office Outlook 2013.
  2. Click the File button on the Ribbon interface.
  3. Click Account Settings icon. (Info tab in the Main Menu).
  4. Select Account Settings from context menu options.
  5. This opens up a new dialog named Account Settings.
  6. You see the list of all email accounts in Email tab.
  7. Select your active email account which displayed IMAP folder error.
  8. Click Change icon.
  9. Click More Settings in the new dialog that opens.
  10. Click the Advanced tab.
  11. Click Folder Options | Root folder path.
  12. Select Inbox.
  13. Click the Save button.
  14. Now test your send/ receive request by pressing F9 key of your keyboard.
