Check Network Cable

A network cable is a mean to connect modem/ router to your CPU. It is used for transmitting data. The network cable connected to your computer can be damaged. Check the status of your network cable and if it is damaged, please replace it.

Check Network Adapter Device Status

Your Network Adapter icon is displayed in the Network Connections page of the Control Panel. This page displays icons of all network adapters connected to your computer. Fix error 628 by enabling your network adapter.

For Windows 8:

  • Press the Windows Key.
  • Type “ncpa.cpl” in the Search Box.
  • Click the Apps icon.
  • Open it from the Search Results.
  • You’ll see couple of network adapter icons in the Network Connections page. Right click the active network adapter, select “Enable” option.

For Earlier Versions of Windows:

To open Network Connections page, click Start | All Programs | Accessories | Run and follow remaining steps; or click Start, type the given command.

Reinstall Network Driver

While connecting your computer for the first time to the Internet, you would have installed a network driver. This driver can be corrupt and needs to be reinstalled in order to fix error 628.


For Windows 8:

  • Move your cursor to the extreme left side of the Taskbar.
  • When you’ll see Start Screen icon, right click it and select “Programs and Features” option.
  • A programs list will appear on your screen. Right click your network driver software, select “Uninstall” option and follow the on-screen wizard.
  • Visit the website of your Internet Service Provider, download and install the latest version of your network driver.

Click Start | Control Panel | Programs | Uninstall a Program and remaining steps are the same.

Check IP Address

To fix error 628 make sure that the IP Address entered specified in your Internet settings is correct. Check and modify it, if required to do so.


For Windows 8:

  • Press the Windows Key.
  • Type “Network and Sharing Center” in the Search Box.
  • Click the Settings icon.
  • Open it from the Search Results.
  • In the new page you’ll see active network. Click its link.
  • Click Properties button | Networking tab.
  • Select your protocol version, for example, Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/ IPv6) and click Properties button.
  • Check and replace existing IP Address and DNS Server Address values and then click OK | OK | Close.

For Earlier Versions of Windows:

Click Start, type “Network and Sharing Center” in the Search Box and press ENTER. Remaining steps are the same.

Disable Firewall Protection

Firewall conflicts can also be a reason. Disable the firewall protection as shown below:


For Windows 8:

  • Press the Windows Key.
  • Type “Check firewall status” in the Search Box.
  • Click the Settings icon.
  • Click “Turn Windows Firewall on or off” link on the left side panel.
  • Disable the firewall protection and click OK | Close.

For Earlier Versions of Windows:

Click Start | Control Panel | System and Security | Check Firewall Status (Under “Windows Firewall” category). Remaining steps are the same.
